Let the phrase through.
Quiet the gaps.

Control the gaps between phrases with Gate and Expander modes, hysteresis, hold, detector filters and an optional external sidechain.

Threshold and range

Set the threshold from -80 to 0 dB and attenuation range from 0 to 80 dB. Range lets the gate soften the gaps instead of forcing complete silence.

Attack, hold and release

Open in 0.1 to 100 ms, hold for up to 500 ms and release over 10 to 2000 ms. Give word endings enough time to fade.

Hysteresis

Separate opening and closing thresholds by up to 18 dB to reduce chatter around the threshold.

Gate or Expander

Choose a gate for defined openings, or downward expansion with an adjustable ratio from 1:1 to 20:1 and a softer knee.

Detector filters and Listen

Focus detection with a high-pass filter up to 1 kHz and a low-pass filter up to 20 kHz. Listen auditions the detector; either filter can be turned off.

Sidechain and mix

Use the input or an external sidechain to trigger the gate. Adjust Input, Output and Mix to fit the track.

Start with the voice.

Listen in the arrangement and make small adjustments as the performance changes.

Start below the quietest phrase
Lower Threshold until soft words open the gate reliably. Raise it only enough to reduce the unwanted gaps.
Keep the endings
Increase Hold or Release if breaths, room tails or the ends of words disappear too suddenly.
Use expansion for a softer result
A lower ratio and moderate Range can reduce background sound more gradually. A gate does not remove noise underneath an open vocal.
